Common Digestive Diseases and Disorders

Our digestive system is made up of the esophagus, stomach, the intestines (both small and large), the rectum and the anus. These organs comprise the digestive tract. The digestive process begins at the moment we place food in our mouth and start chewing.

Just like any other bodily system, our digestive system is also prone to various diseases and disorders. They vary in causes as well as symptoms. Here are some of the common diseases and disorders that affect our digestive system.

Ulcer: This is one of the most common digestive disorders. It is generally attributable to causes such as stress, not eating on time, medications, etc. Here, sores open up in the walls of the stomach, duodenum or esophagus.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): Commonly known as heartburn, this disorder is due to the abnormal reflux of stomach acids to the esophagus. The pain is usually felt in the chest and breastbone area.

Gastritis: It is caused by excessive alcohol consumption, irregular medication or bacteria. This disorder can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, among others.

Diverticulosis: This condition affects the large intestine and/or colon. It can be very painful and can cause constipation and bloating. It can also induce nausea and fever.

Constipation: Everybody has probably had constipation. This is among the most common digestive disorders and is caused by various factors ranging from an unhealthy lifestyle or diet, improper medication or irregular medical conditions. It causes infrequent bowel movements. This disorder can be relieved with laxatives.
